First Home Remodel

Well its been 3 months since Michael bought the place, and we've already begun the first remodeling project. We are going to turn the useless, broken steam room, into a functional, combination laundry room and pantry. It will be SO nice to not have to go out into the garage to do laundry! I know, we are crazy to start such a big project with our wedding a little more than a month away, but Michael was excited about starting it for some reason. To be sure, it needs to be done. We knew that when he bought the house, I just thought we might wait until we got back from our honeymoon. Silly me!

Michael started the demo yesterday and it went more smoothly than I anticipated. Also I was super impressed at Michael's demo skills. I guess I've never deconstructed a room before, but Michael made it look easy. A sledge hammer and a crow bar are all it takes to transform a tiled steam room, into a bare shell of a room. The sound of shattering tile and ripping wood from nails is deafening and oddly satisfying. Removing a crappy, useless room to make way for a very useful space is kind of like picking off a scab. It hurts in the short term and is a big mess, but boy is it gratifying! I also never realized how heavy broken tile can be! As he removes it from the wall, we've been collecting piles of broken tile and throwing it into the garbage. That can must weigh close to 80 lbs and its not even full yet (its a small 2x1x2 can)!

Our long term plan is to completely tear out the existing room to the studs, then extend it into the current garage, by building up a floor and extending the walls. In this way we can bring the washer and dryer inside from the garage, as well as add shelving to make a pantry with additional storage. God knows this house needs any extra storage space we can get! Once the tear down is complete, we will hire a handy man to help us with the electrical and plumbing (things neither of us have any experience with). I hope we can get this most of the way there before our wedding rehearsal dinner in February. I guess only time will tell!
