Getting new windows: we have been talking about it for a year now. We had original aluminum windows from 1979 (I believe) and like any old windows, they leaked, had condensation problems and generally did not keep the house very warm. The other weird thing about them is that a few years after the house was built, the owners decided to add a second set of windows right on top of the old ones. Perhaps this was before double paned windows existed, or perhaps they were cheap sons of b-----s, in any case, to fully open any of the windows, you had to slide two panes away. 'Storm windows' apparently is the term for this style; weird is what I call it.
The debate on whether to replace them raged (well more like limped) on for several months. I argued that we could simply turn up the heat in the winter months. Surely the added cost of additional electricity would come no where near the cost of total replacement. In the end however, it was mold that decided the argument. The windows created copious amounts of condensation that would would leak into the window tracks, creating pools of fetid water and pink mold. 'Gross' does not even come close to describing it. After cleaning said pools several times, I acquiesced to new windows.
The Job only took 3 days to complete! I was a little worried about the workers ruining my plants (of course nearly every window has a flower garden directly under it), but damage was minimal. We couldn't be happier with the result: clean, white frames that look great on the house, easy to open frames, better noise and temperature control and best of all, no mold or condensation! Even though I didn't want to spend that much money right now, I'm really glad we did! With all of the projects we have completed on the house thus far, it has really improved since we moved in.
