The Oriental Poppy: I've forgotten how much I love these early summer beauties. They are an ephemeral herald of summer, each bloom lasting only 2-5 days. Although many people despise the poppy's hatred for being moved, and their somewhat ragged post-bloom foliage, i think the beauty of their flower more than makes up for it. Not to mention their evergreen leaves add much needed green during winter's gloom.
While historically the only colors they could be found in were orange and sometimes pink, in recent years a plethora of rainbow colors have emerged from breeders. In addition to bright orange and salmon pink, there is plum purple, butter yellow, white and black, white with orange tips, dark burgundy and shades of red and scarlet. They even now have ones whose petals are fringed. I myself am a proud owner of such a one. They lend such cheery, bright color spots to the garden that I couldn't imagine a better addition to any landscape. Go Poppies!
