Lilies!

I added lilies to my garden for the first time last year. It was kind of an accident that I planted them in the first place. The garden center was about to throw them out and I intervened at the last minute. I kind of felt like a governor making the call to that special phone in the execution chamber (only slightly less dramatic though). So I planted them but didn't expect much.

Once they bloomed, I discovered that they had both good and bad features. They were exceptionally beautiful and added much needed height to the back border. Half were Asiatic lilies and therefore didn't smell, while the other half were Oriental lilies and smelt like heaven. Their colors were amazing and really made the flower bed pop and helped to showcase their neighboring plants better. I also liked that they didn't take up much space. I like to pack as many plants as possible in the back border so that it is continuously blooming from March through October.

The downside to lilies however was they had enormous flower heads and only spindly little stalks. Whats the problem right? Well, this meant I had to stake every one of them and stakes don't come cheap. I had to buy a whole package of stakes especially for them. The other problem is that their flowers don't last especially long. The Oriental lilies lasted about a week and a half and the Asiatic lilies about two weeks. Luckily I had planted 3 different varieties so that between all of them they lasted about a month. They also bloom really late in the summer starting at the beginning of August and going to September. Its a little demoralizing to wait so long for something to bloom only to not have it last long. *Sigh*

Oh well. Over all, I still love lilies more than I dislike them, thus bringing me to my point today: I bought 3 more kinds of lilies at Flower World so that the back border can be even more flowerful this next summer. Since I actually got to pick these out (as opposed to rescuing the rejects) I got some REALLY COOL ones. Now I am super excited to see them bloom. There WILL be pictures, guaranteed! Below are pictures of the lilies from last year (1st 6) and pictures I found online of what the lilies I bought this year will look like (last 4). Hooray for flowers!
