Even though I live only 10 minutes from downtown Seattle, I find that I rarely go there. The traffic is usually bad and the parking is either nonexistent or expensive. Thus I try to avoid going there most of the time. However, whenever I do go there, I always feel a bit like a tourist in my own town. I look up thinking, 'oooh, look at all the BIG buildings!' It makes me feel a bit like some backwoods bumpkin. That being said, once I am down there, I always have a good time. Watching all of the people and being around all of the frenetic energy gives me a sense of vitality and increased awareness.
On Sunday, Michael and I decided to add a little zest to our weekend of working on the house (just to clarify, I was doing no work and loving it! Michael was the one working hard to get the nursery in order), by going downtown for a bit. Luckily, parking on Sunday is free, and we were able to get a spot. It must have been our lucky day!
We walked through the market and along the waterfront, stopping to admire various landmarks and activities along the way. One thing I always forget about being in the city, is all of the different sensory experiences I have there. The smells in particular are always unique. Cinnamon rolls, mixed with fish, with a little bit of coffee added in and some strong curry. Hey, I never said it was an appetizing smell environment!
The sounds are so interesting too. People shouting and singing, whistles, banjos, clapping, jangling and honking all add to the cacophony of urban life. It is this new and different mix of sensory input that always makes me feel like a stranger in a strange land. I like that I can go no more than 10 minutes from my home, and experience a whole different world. This is why I live in the city. I just love having the option (even if I don't utilize it much) of experiencing new and different things whenever the mood strikes me, without traveling great distances. I truly love this town!
