Today was the long awaited 20 week appointment for the gender and anatomy ultrasound scan. I left work early and picked Michael up downtown. What was supposed to be a quick trip (his office is only like 5 miles from my work), turned into a 35 minute saga of slow drivers and hitting every. single. stoplight. Of course, the downtown stop lights occur every 50 feet or so. Gah! It didn't help that I was super anxious to get to this appointment as soon as possible. Needless to say, we were a little late to the appointment, but as it turned out, we ended up waiting in the waiting room for 20 minutes so it didn't matter.
Once the ultrasound started we were there for an hour, looking at every part of our baby from fingers and toes to lips and his nose. We saw cross sections of his body and all of his major organs, including the liver, kidneys, stomach, and even all 4 chambers of his little heart. We did have her double check the sex (I didn't want any surprises post delivery!) and he was all to eager to show off the goods.
His face on the other hand proved more elusive. He had settled down into this position where his head was on my cervix with his feet near my stomach, diagonally across my womb. Apparently my placenta is covering the entire front wall of my uterus (which is probably why I haven't felt him kick much as it acts like a buffer). So he was laying face up, with his face practically buried in my placenta. We needed to get a good picture of his face to rule out cleft palate, but despite all of my best efforts (jumping, shaking my belly, dancing, bending over, raising my pelvis and poking my uterus), he would not budge from that position. Stubborn little monkey! FINALLY he moved just enough to get the shot we needed and the tech determined that he does not in fact have cleft palate thank goodness!
So, from this scan we were able to determine that he is growing schedule (he now weighs approximately 13 ounces with 9-11oz being normal. Hes a big guy!) and has all the parts he is supposed to have, in all the right places. Growth wise, they placed him at 20 weeks, 1 day, which is pretty much right on target. Not that I was overly concerned that something was wrong, but it is certainly nice to have that confirmation.
