As of this morning,
William now weighs 29 lbs, has a head circumference of 19 1/2" and is
36.5" tall.
William's language skills continue to develop. He is starting to use more complete sentences with more words, and is starting to use the correct pronouns (like me and I and you instead of just 'Will'). He is also better at using plurals and past and present tense. When we have story time, he asks to read specific books by their title (or sometimes a partial title), instead of just pointing to it. He has started saying "oh dear" when something goes wrong. It cracks me up! Tonight Michael was getting Will ready for bed, when Will told him that he had pooped. Michael asked if it was a big poop and Will said yes enthusiastically. Michael then asked him if it was a monster poop, to which Will responded that it was a cookie monster poop!
He has started developing specific opinions about music lately. Most annoyingly, he hates many of my favorite songs! I start listening to my cd in the car, and one of my favorite songs come on, and he starts crying and saying, "no! no! no!" Little stinker!!! Then when a song comes on that he does like, he says, "oooh! Good music!"
I sing him a bedtime song before every nap and at bedtime. When I do, I pick him up and he lays his head on my shoulder and I rub his back while singing it. Lately he has taken to rubbing my back also while I am rubbing his. Its so sweet to feel his small little hand gently rubbing my shoulder. I have also started a tradition of giving him 3 types of kisses before laying him into his crib: an eskimo kiss, a butterfly kiss and a peck on the lips. He has come to really love that tradition and if I ever forget, he makes sure to remind me. He is so cute (mostly) right now!
He is obsessed with having me take pictures of everything he is doing. I suppose thats my fault for so closely documenting his life up until now, but he wants pictures of every little thing he does. Dancing? picture! Eating a popsicle? Picture! Building a tower? Picture! The one good thing about that is when I actually oblige him and take a picture of whatever it is he is doing, at least he stays still and looks at the camera. Most of my other pictures of him turn out blurry he is always moving so much!
His other new obsession is having me sing songs about everything. He will look around the room, or whatever environment he is in, and ask me to sing songs about the things he sees. So every 5 minutes, all day long he will ask me to "sing ___ song?" and that could be the ball song, or the truck song, or the black car song, or the shovel song, or the tree song. Since none of these songs exist, I have to make them up on the spot. In the morning, when I have the most energy, I can actually manage to make rhyming, coherent lyrics with a catchy tune. But after 12 hours of singing these songs non-stop, by bedtime the songs are admittedly short, off key and terrible. That doesn't deter him from continuing to ask though!
He can now count comfortably to 20 (though he has trouble making an audible distinction between13 and 14), and is comfortable enough with his letters that he can play simple computer games based around the alphabet. We have this LeafFrog toy computer and it has games that require him to match letters, or identify the correct letter and he is able to play them and get them all right! So thats kind of fun to see him actually interacting with the machine in the way it was intended, instead of just randomly pushing buttons to hear the sound. To keep himself busy, he loves to run, color, play with kenetic sand, play with his multitude of trucks and most of all, build large, impressive towers out of blocks, or just about anything he can stack.
Nora has started to really watch him and get amusement from him, and he has noticed this and now LOVES to perform for her. He wakes up in the morning saying, "Nowa, dance?" Which means, 'I want to dance for Nora (and make her laugh).' Its so fun to see the two of them interacting more and more. Will is SUCH a sweet big brother so far! He shares all of his toys (even his favorite trucks) unprompted, he helps her to pick up any toys that she has dropped, he helps me throw her diapers away and helps me wake her up in the morning and from naps, by turning on the light, and turning off the sound machine and fan (white noise devices to drown out the sound of noisy cars and sirens in the street below). He is starting to love to get on the ground an play with her more lately too. Hes still a little funny about her touching him. If her hand happens to graze his skin, he grimaces and giggles and pulls away. But he does ask on a daily basis for Nora to "getchu?" or get him. Which means that we lay her on top of his back and she kind of flails around and grabs his shirt and hair, while he giggles wildly. Its a riot.
Lately the tantrums are getting better. He still has them, and cries and whines a lot, but its down to a few times a day, instead of constantly. I think his better grasp on language has much to do with it. I for one could not be more grateful too! This is a cute, fun age. He is my little buddy, and I get great joy out of his love of hugs, kisses and cuddles. I will take all that I can while he is still willing to dish them out!
