William 5.2

Will has been able to feed himself easy breakfasts for a year now. So before the baby was born, I would wake him up first. He would dress himself and get himself breakfast, while I woke up sleepy Nora and got her dressed. He was often finishing just as we were walking down the stairs. Nora has never been much of a breakfast person (like me) getting her to eat anything feels like a win most mornings. So I was pretty surprised when I walked into the kitchen this morning and Will informed me that he had already served breakfast to himself AND Nora. Both were happily munching waffles and watching cartoons without any input from me whatsoever. I feel like I've arrived! By the way, Nora almost NEVER accepts waffles when I ask her if she wants them. Apparently Will is the breakfast god!

He has been enjoying school lately and while hes pretty silent regarding the details of his day, right after I pick him up from school, those details slowly leak out over the rest of the week (we are still just doing one day a week - preschool is EXPENSIVE!). He tells me about how hes been working on writing letters and notes (and brings home said notes to prove it. I have been impressed with how hes been writing and sounding out words by himself!), he tells me about his new friends, his tumbling class and teacher, and some of the games he plays with other kids. Hes given me more details about school in 3 weeks, than I heard nearly all of last year!

I can tell hes a little perturbed about why some of his same aged friends went to kindergarten this year, and why he did not. Hes brought the subject up several times. I've explained to him that he was a bit too young and that I wanted him to be older and more confidant, and better at school subjects than younger and potentially not. I know he doesn't really understand though. He just sees that hes the only 5 year old we know that got left behind. That feels hard for both of us I think. :( I hope in the long run he will thank me for it though. It was not an easy decision and I suspect it was one of those decisions where there really is no "right" answer. It is what it is.

All of a sudden this month he has had some kind of developmental spurt, where his grasp on math has just exploded by leaps and bounds. He can tell me how many minutes before he is allowed to play video games (i.e. 'mom its 4:52! That means I have 8 minutes before I can play at 5:00!'), what direction we are driving/walking and how many blocks before we reach our destination ('mom we are at 82th street. That means we need to go 9 blocks to get home (on 91st street)!'). We've been talking a lot about incidental math (like directional math or grocery store math or time math) lately, so clearly its been sinking in. I've been impressed with the numbers he can come up with in his head, on multiple occasions now. Hopefully he will have a firm grasp on numbers, like his dad does, one day!
