Will said today, "when I grow up and become a daddy, I'm going to call myself Michael!" Michael and I both had a good laugh at that one. Even when I explained that Will will be named 'Will' his whole life, he continued to assert that one day (only when he was a dad), he'd be named 'Michael.' Pretty cute!
Will sits in the center seat in our car, so he doesn't have his own window to look out of, per se. So Nora always tells him to stop looking out of her window. We tell them all the time that all of the windows belong to Mom and Dad and that they need to stop fighting over that, but that falls on mostly deaf ears. Anyway, the other day Nora once again told him to stop looking out her window, and the exchange happened like this:
N: "No Will! Stop!"
W: "Yes I can!"
N: "No!"
W: "Yes! Because I am a yes man! Its always yes!"
Needless to say Nora did not appreciate his response ;)
Will has been lying a lot lately. Just silly things like if I ask him why Nora is crying (he obviously caused the crying), he will say, "I dont know!" But when I press him he suddenly knows. Or if I ask him if he did something he was supposed to do, he will say, "yes" but then later I find that he didn't do it at all. Stuff like that, and its all totally normal for his age. I've explained to him that lying means that you say things that are not true, and I've explained how important it is never to lie to me as it will make me not trust what he says. Hopefully I will eventually get through to him and this phase will be over. Though I expect on some level that some degree of lying from here on out is to be expected.
Will is suddenly very concerned with privacy. This is the kid that loved to run around naked all summer long in the backyard. Recently I have been having talks with him about private areas and who can and can't look at and touch one's private areas. We had a few incidents in the bath where Will and Nora were comparing notes about anatomy, so I thought it was time to have that particular discussion. I don't know if it was as a result of that discussion, or he would have come to this stage naturally, but all of a sudden he will act somewhat appalled if he sees us naked, and has told us that he doesn't want us to see him naked. The other day Nora tried to go into the bathroom with him and he told her she needed to go out as he needed his privacy. Michael and I just chuckle at the sudden change of heart!
We started swimming lessons again in January with both kids this time. Will surprised me in making some very big gains in his ability to swim from last year. The swimming instructor seem to have noticed too, because they moved him into the more advanced swimmer class category. He could NOT have been more proud of the move too! Its inspired him to listen and learn even more in an effort to continue to advance. At first being in slightly deeper water scared him a bit (before he could more or less stand on the bottom of the pool and now he can't), but he overcame that and is swimming like a little fish. His biggest problem still is and has always been that he does not have an ounce of fat on him, and is solid muscle everywhere (from all the running, jumping and climbing he does), and so he doesn't float, but sinks like a rock in the water. He really has to use quite a bit of energy just to stay afloat. Michael says he was (and still is) the same. So hes going to have to learn some techniques to combat that deficit. I wish I had that problem ;)
We had one funny story from last month. We drove down to visit my parents, a few days before Christmas. We had a lovely little visit and then made the return journey home, on Christmas Eve night. It was a dicey visit as it got cold and started to snow unexpectedly. As a result we got home much later than we had originally anticipated - somewhere around midnight! Amazingly, the kids had just gotten new Kindle Fire tablets from grandma and grandpa, and were glued to their screens for the whole 7 hour drive. I thought for sure they would pass out mid drive! Anyway we pulled into our driveways rather late, and got the kids to bed as soon as we could, which was about 4.5 hours later than usual. They went to bed with little fuss, and then we set out all of the Christmas stuff as quickly as we could, then went to bed ourselves. Around 5am William comes into our room, and we both immediately assume he is up and ready for Christmas morning to commence. Instead, he was there to complain that we had forgotten to set up the box fax that we use for white noise, in his room, and that he was having trouble sleeping without it. So Michael goes in there and sets it up for him and then we all go back to sleep for 3 more hours! Will has always been a good little sleeper, but on Christmas morning? Its kind of ridiculous
! But we were not complaining about getting more sleep!
He still loves his little brother to pieces and spends all sorts of time trying to make him laugh, and teach him things. And Daniel just loves him right back. Its really precious to see their special bond. Of course that means that Nora sometimes gets left out, and that is hard. But we are all learning how to balance out the new relationships as time goes on. In the mean time Will is learning how to be a better brother and a better person every day!
