Eleanor at 3.8

Nora likes to tell me that she is growing every day and she will be a grown up soon! I tell her she needs to stop growing right now! The other day after I told her this, she responded by shaking her fist at me, telling me that she would NOT stop growing, and that she was going to make ME mac and cheese (a measure of how mature she is)! Somebody is big for their britches!

She is getting braver and more competent at riding her balance bike. I've have several people comment to me about how fast she is able to glide about. Recently shes gotten the confidence to go down hills faster than she ever has before. This has led to a crash or two unfortunately, as she just gets going too fast and loses control. So far though she has cried, dusted herself off and gotten right back on the bike! I remember when Will was this age and crashing, he would refuse to ride for a few days after crashes like that. She is a resilient little thing!

A big favorite of hers lately is playing 'games' and telling 'jokes' lately. I put those things in quotes because they are not official games or real jokes, but rather ones that she makes up. Her favorite 'game' is called, 'Lets Tell a Story!' This is where we each take turns coming up with a short story, usually no more than a minute long. Generally her stories will share a lot of the same features that my story had, but with a few differences. But she is learning the art of story telling and that is valuable. She also makes up silly jokes all the time - usually these involve bodily fluids and toilets - and she thinks they are hilarious. Really with both of these things, I am just impressed at how far her language has come in s short time. I was watching a video of her from November and I can understand her SO much better now, and she can say so many more words now too. I think she will be more than ready for preschool in the fall!

Suddenly she is very interested in finding and collecting rocks of unusual patterns and colors. She constantly tells me that she wants to start a rock collection in her room. Nora reminds me of myself at that age, because I also became obsessed with rock hunting (I still love to in fact) at that age and had a rock collection of my own for many years. So I gave her a special box she can put her rocks in. It was my box as a little girl and she is so thrilled with it, that she carries it around the house, everywhere she goes. Its super cute.

Lately she has been going to bed with a lot less struggle than a month or two ago. Before, she would constantly come out of her room, or beg for food or water (with a totally full stomach mind you), try to play with Will, come downstairs and ask for random things, the works! Finally now she goes to bed with little resistance for the most part. One phase we will be glad to have over however, is her propensity to poop every night, right after bedtime. We think she does it as a way to avoid being in her bedroom, but its also possible that she is just so busy during the day that bedtime is the only time she stops long enough to think about doing it. Shes super consistent about it though and I can nearly set my watch to her calls of, "mom, I pooped!" coming from the upstairs bathroom.

Nora is obsessed with the tooth fairy and the idea of losing teeth. She tells me nearly every day about how excited she is to lose a tooth. She talks as though it were imminent, but then I have to remind her that she will likely be 6 before she loses her first tooth. This only slightly dampens her enthusiasm.

Lately, when Nora is upset about something, she will collapse, throwing herself onto the floor, then tell me in a calm voice, "mom, I'm having a tantrum!" She is such a drama queen. After I give her a nice, long hug, all is well in the world again. I wish my problems were so easily solved!

Now that she is fully able to dress herself in the morning (and wow am I ever glad shes finally able to do that. She picks out cute little outfits too!), shes become interested in helping me to get dressed as well, and offers to put my bra and underwear on for me. I decline every time but I do let her help me select a shirt or dress to wear. She is especially thrilled when we match on occasion. I love this age and her desire to be like me in every way. It fills my heart with joy!

One funny little thing happened on Easter morning. Michael hid the kid's Easter baskets and had them hunt for them downstairs. They played the hot and cold game until both kids were literally standing right next to their baskets - in Nora's case her head was actually touching hers - and they still couldn't find them! She kept turning her head in the opposite direction as the basket and proclaiming she couldn't find it. Finally Michael pointed out that it was touching her ear, and she finally found it!

Nora and Will have been taking a tumbling class that has been going on the last two months or so. They both love it, but Nora has particularly blossomed over the course of the class. She has always been a flexible little thing, in fact, on the first day, the teachers had them do this exercise where they spread their legs and then bent their torsos down toward the ground. Most kids could get about halfway down, a few got close to the ground with some straining, but Nora laid all the way on the ground with zero effort. Her teachers were shocked. They were also shocked when she was able to do the splits with ease. She gets that from me! But over the course of the class she learned to listen and became a lot braver with trying new maneuvers and I could tell she had a lot of fun!
