Eleanor 3.10

The other day Nora was asking me why God gave her toe nails. I began discussing why toenails are necessary and I was using the pronoun 'he' and 'him' in reference to God. Nora then asked me if God was a boy. I responded that we don't really know whether God is a man or a woman, and that God might be a 'she' for all we know. Nora was thrilled at this idea and said, "god might be a girl just like me?!" I could tell she really liked that idea!

One funny thing she has been doing lately, is referring to Will as, "my brother named Will." So for example, she will say something like, "Mom, my brother named Will hit me!" I guess she realizes that she has to differentiate between her two brothers, but the phrasing of it just cracks me up!

We had a fun morning together a few weeks ago. She wanted to play dollhouse and baby dolls. She has three baby dolls (that she named herself): Nyla, Jasmine and Pinkalicious (because she's pink!). Anyway she was taking her time, feeding each of them (some breast, some bottle feeds), and brushing their hair and placing them gently into their cradle and them covering them gently with a blanket, until they were all 'asleep.' I patted her on the back and said, "Nora, you are such a good mommy! You are doing such a good job with those babies!" She gave a little sigh and in a weary, but heartfelt voice said, "thanks mom!" It made me flash forward 25 years to when we might have that same conversation about real babies and it suddenly became very poignant. Enough that I swallowed a lump in my throat.

Later, we were still playing, and she decided she wanted to wear her 'bride's dress.' Its a hand me down white, fancy flower girl dress our friend's gave us. We also have a toy veil and she wanted to get totally kitted out in the bride look. So I did her hair and put her veil in and got her dressed. After she was done admiring herself in the mirror, she mused to herself, 'when my brother Will marries me, he will give me a ring, and then he will kiss me!' Then a minute later she decided she wanted to marry me, so we had a small wedding ceremony in the hallway. Dirty Frank (her giant stuffed bear) and Mona the Monkey were witnesses. We exchanged rings. It was a lovely, low-key affair.

Nora LOVES to play dress up and changes her clothes frequently. Its not uncommon to see a pile of clothes on her bedroom floor as shes searched to find the perfect outfit. Something tells me that won't change as she gets into her teen years ;)

One day, and I'm not quite sure how this came up, but I told the kids the story of the Donner party. Something about this story struck a chord with both kids, but particularly Nora. She had me repeat the story to her again and again and again. At least 4-5 times a day, every day, for a month. She was just fascinated by it. And shes not great at pronouncing her R's, so her requests would sound like, "mom, can you tell me about the Donno pouty?" And then she'd sit back with a look of contentment while I told the super kid-friendly tale of frostbite, cannibalism and survival. She is a funny little kid, thats for sure!

One last cute thing from this month is that she got a pink-a-bloom. Her new favorite cartoon is called Pinkalicious and in one of the episodes from the show, the main character gets a seed in the mail, plants it and a giant pink flower grows overnight. Its all very girly and magical. Nora loved this and while playing in the yard one day, found a tiny pink seed-like thing. She asked me if she could plant it and I let her bury it in one of my vegetable raised beds. A few weeks later I went up to Fred Meyer and found a pretty pink Dahlia and planted in the same spot she had planted the seed. After she woke up from her nap, I called her over to the garden and showed her that her seed had indeed grown overnight, just like on the show! She was so surprised and thrilled. I loved bringing a little magic to her day!

I just love Eleanor so much. She brings so much light and laughter to our house. She has the sweetest but also kookiest personality. She makes us all laugh all the time. Shes strong and resilient and tries hard to improve her physical skills (so she can better keep up with Will). I am so grateful she is part of our family every day!
