William at 6

Lately William has not been having as many new or noteworthy moments, or maybe I have just been really bad at writing things down and remembering, but for whatever reason, do to a scarcity of good writing material, I decided to combine all of June, July and August into one post.

William graduated from Ms. Tara's Preschool in June. He had learned all of the songs for the ceremony perfectly and he looked so cute in his little paper graduation cap. I was honestly excited and proud of him and was not expecting to get emotional, but when it came to the part where he got his little paper 'diploma', I totally lost it and started crying. It didn't help that there were several other blubbering moms in my vicinity. We all lost it together. Our babies are going to grade school!

Wills new go-to descriptive word is marvelous. And he elongates the syllables so it comes out sounding like, 'maaaarvellllous!' He's told me that my singing is marvelous (when he is trying to convince me to sing him another bedtime song), and he often tells me that my dinners are marvelous - even when he doesn't like what I've cooked (which is often). I've got to give him points for trying!

Another cute word of his came about while we were on a neighborhood walk one day. On this one stretch of hillside, water constantly trickles down the street all year round. Algae grows on the areas where the water is, and Will is terrified to step on it. He calls it 'allergy' and tries to avoid it at all costs. Its one of the few misstated words he has left and both Michael and I think its really cute.

Speaking of mis-spoken words, the other day Will asked me if I was going to watch 'Gary's Enemy.' I was confused and said, 'no! I've never heard of that show!' Eventually, after some follow up questioning, it was revealed that he actually meant to say, 'Grey's Anatomy,' a show that I  do often watch. It just cracked me up so much how he interpreted the title of that show!

Today we were talking about the different continents on our planet and when we got to the South Pole and asked me if that is where mean Santa lives. I had a good chuckle about that and then informed him that sadly, only penguins and seals live there.

At the end of June, Will has a second loose tooth and was showing it to Michael one night. Ever the joker, Michael pretended that he too, had a loose tooth, and invited Will to touch it. Will did, and when his finger touched Michael's tooth, Michael winced and yelled out in pretend pain. Will immediately jumped back, deathly afraid that he had harmed Michael. Michael cracked up laughing and by the look on Will's face, we could tell he felt silly for being tricked so easily. It will not be long before Michael will not be able to play those kinds of games on Will anymore. Will is starting to get Michael's number fast! Will ended up losing that tooth a few weeks later while we were staying at a beach house in Lincoln City. Unfortunately we never found the tooth, so the Tooth Fairy had to make a belated visit once we had returned home.

As always Will continues to be so bright with numbers. He learned to count in all odd numbers, up to 100, in 2 minutes flat. He really has a head for figures and loves for me to give him mathematic word problems to solve. He will be silent, thinking about things and then he speaks and a pretty advanced understanding of numbers and how they relate to the world, emerges from his mouth. He regularly astounds me! He can do multiplication in his head and loves to count in different ways (in even or odd numbers, by 2s, 5s, 10s, etc). I hope he will be challenged enough in school. I know that was always Michael's problem!

He has been doing chores to earn an allowance for several months now and has been doing a great job. He nearly never complains and empties out the compost and garbage cans promptly. Hes been earning $5 per week and had been using the money judiciously to buy coveted items. So far hes bought several lego sets and a soccer ball that lights up when you kick it. Michael and I had both wondered when he would learn to get excited about pay day. Mostly we would have to remind him when pay day was happening, and he would always seem underwhelmed by the whole thing. This past week was different however. He had been saving to buy his most recent lego set and was pretty excited about it. Payday is always Saturday and on Friday night, Michael casually asked him what day the next day was, and Will eagerly replied, "payday!" He had saved up $20 - the amount he thought he needed to buy this monster truck lego he had been lusting after. When we got to the store it turned out to be on sale and he walked away with $4 extra. He learned the value of payday AND a sale that day.

Will is an intelligent, fascinating kid, who is not afraid to be himself. He is interested in all sorts of things. Case in point, we talk about death all the time and recently he proclaimed that when he died (at 150 no less!), he wants to be cremated. He has an infectious giggle and loves all manner of potty talk. He loves to push his body physically and is always running, jumping, cycling, doing gymnastics and just moving. In preparation for kindergarten, we've finally dropped naps, and as a result, at night he just goes straight to bed and sleeps for 11 hours straight! Hes a talker too and always has something really important to tell me. He still LOVES legos and excels at building his own creations from all of the assorted kits hes accumulated over the years. At his preschool graduation, he was voted 'most likely to be a Lego engineer.' It was very fitting! He is extremely excited for kindergarten to start and I feel confidant that he is more than ready this year and will do so well. Its hard for me to believe we are already at this stage! I wish for the happiest 6th birthday to my sweet William!
