William 6.6

He announced one day that he wanted to buy his teacher some flowers. He told me that he had seen a bouquet at the grocery store that cost $6.99 and that he had $7 in his piggy bank. So we took him to the grocery store, he bought the flowers and the next day, presented them to his teacher. He can be the sweetest little guy sometimes! As it turned out, by pure chance, he selected carnations, and they are her favorite flower! So she was doubly touched and told us several times how much she enjoyed them.

He is the worst when it comes to holes. He will notice that a hole is in an article of clothing, and pick at it or try to put his fingers or hand through it until its a giant, gaping hole. He will come up to me with his entire knee poking out of a hole in his pant leg and I have to reprimand him for making the hole larger (and harder to patch). The other day he did it with a hat. Earlier that day the brim of his hat had about a one inch hole in it. I made a mental note to stitch it closed while he was at school, but forgot. Sure enough, he comes home from school with his entire hand in the hole (which is now about 4" across), saying, "look mom, its a puppet!" SIGH! This kid!

He has always been fascinated with how Michael can move his eyebrows. I witnessed him moving his eyebrows independently as a baby, but haven't seen him do it much since. The other night I caught him practicing moving them in the mirror and I think he may well get as good as Michael at moving them one day. He was pretty proud of himself though.

When school first started, he used to play imagination/pretend games at recess, with a pack of boys from his class. Things like pretending to be ninjas, or spies, that sort of thing. Recently however hes been really into Kickball. William is a very competitive kid and HATES to lose (there are many tantrums over losing around here), and so there were some rough times as he adjusted to learning the rules and learning to play on a team. Lately though I think thats all been sorted and hes figured things out and spends every chance he gets at recess, playing his new favorite game. As I pick him up from school, he will give me a play by play of his most recent game, and always tells me if he got a grand slam or not. I'm just glad hes making friends, having fun, and learning to be a team player!

This month we got a ton of snow, and that meant a lot of time off. It came just after winter break, and just before midwinter break. Plus there was President's Day and Martin Luther King Day and so there have been a LOT of days at home recently! He does not do well with changes in routine, and so we had to deal with some behavior issues (mostly bad attitudes and sibling torture), and I tried to kick him out as much as I could. The roads were icy and treacherous and unplowed, so we couldn't drive anywhere, but we put the littles in a sled and dragged them all the way to Dahl park and back, a few times. We also did neighborhood walks in the snow with the sled. Will spent many an hour sledding, making snowmen and snow angels and eating fresh snow. Just a few weeks before this, he was complaining that we never got any snow around here. The weather gods must have heard his plea and he got all that he wanted, and more. With all of the snow days, we'll be in school all the way through June! Gah!

Will is mostly very cute these days. The issue we are constantly dealing with non-stop, is his blatant disregard for personal space or property. I have to tell him constantly to not take things out of people's hands, or to get out of people's personal space. I don't even think hes trying to be malicious, he just has impulse control issues. Its very frustrating. Its very good that he has siblings, otherwise I'm guessing he'd be getting into a lot more fights at school. He will learn eventually and I will be glad when that day comes! But each year gets better and better, so there is that! Otherwise he is sweet, thoughtful, and VERY helpful around the house and with Daniel. So its 6 of one, half a dozen of the other!
