Is it Spring Yet?

While the rain continues to pour, and it certainly doesn't feel like late spring, it sure looks like it. We may not like the rain, but the plants are just exploding with love of it. Looking at pictures from last month, the garden has nearly doubled in size, most of that in the past 2 weeks!

For my part, I'm actually not that sad about the weather this year. The temperature is warm enough that when it does rain, it feels like a tropical downpour in Hawaii or South America. Plus, I don't have to water! I really began to resent that practice early on last year. I haven't had to do it once this year; its fantastic. Plus I have read approximately 10 books in the past month. That's more than this past winter! The only downsides are that it makes outdoor exercise less feasible and the grass is now so water logged that it has started sprouting these weird little brown mushrooms. Its like the grass is sending up hundreds of little umbrellas to shield it from the watery onslaught.

Yard work must get done however, no matter the weather. I have been in sun, rain, wind and hail recently, sometimes all in the same day. The task that I had been putting off for far too many months, was trimming the monstrous maple behind our fence. It has been shading out my perennial border and flowers are starting to die. I decided this was the day to do it. Of course, it poured all day. Thus I had to climb up one very slippery trunk and lateral branch, inching along on my stomach to reach the limbs to be pruned.

This tree is located on a severe slope and directly below it is a bus stop. I think I surprised several people waiting for the bus when they happened to notice a very wet and dirty Nicole, suspended in a tree 50 feet above them. One gentleman in particular was concerned but as I assured him, while I looked very far off the ground to him, because of the slope I was actually only 10 feet above ground near the trunk. I think he probably thought I was a nutcase. I rather felt like one. Now, after all of that sawing, my arms are quite tired. Who says you can't get a good outdoor workout in wet weather?
