As I sit on my couch and look out at the 4th consecutive week of rain, I begin to feel twitchy. Cabin fever has set in big time and there's not much I can do about it. I don't want to be outside and there is no where I need to go. Its to the point where a trip to the grocery store to grab a forgotten gallon of milk excites me. Wow.
Lately as I stare out the window I've been trying to dream up garden plans for next year. Specifically I'd like to cut down several diseased trees and replace them with different, healthy ones. I'd also like to replace a recalcitrant forsythia with a lovely black beauty Elderberry. However, both of these tasks are massive undertakings and lately I have neither the energy nor the motivation to do either of them.
What I have been doing is looking over the pictures I took month by month this past growing season and marveling at the growth and changes that happened each month. Its so much easier to appreciate it in retrospect. I particularly love comparing photos from early March to late June and seeing how much things changed. I also like looking at February's pictures and eagerly waiting for those same small changes to happen now.
Each flower bed has undergone so many non physiological changes as I have added and moved plants around each year and season. Its a big learning experiment as I learn what plants work in theory versus practice and how visually appealing certain combinations are in my head versus real life. I love it! Experience really is the best teacher. So, as I sit here on this gray, rainy day, I eagerly anticipate next year's outdoor lessons.
