This "spring", if you can even call it that, is depressing. Sure, in the past few days we have finally gotten some sun, but the temperatures have been so cold. I know I have no right to complain about 50 degree temps when in other places it is much colder. STILL, I would like to have more days that are at or above the average temperature. This is too tall of an order for the weather gods apparently.
We are about 3 -4 weeks behind last year in terms of plant growth. I am only this week, starting work back up after the winter break, when normally I would start in late February. No one is out gardening on these dreary, cold days. I guess the upside to this is that we will have spring flowers that last longer than they normally do. I have some daffodils that only bloomed for 2 weeks last year and they are working on their 2nd week so far and only half are opened. I wouldn't be surprised if they bloomed for a full month!
Other changes are beginning to happen as well. Perennials are expanding and the peonies are unfurling their bright red buds. The dogwoods all have tiny, bright green leaves emerging and the primroses are flowering like crazy. I am just a very impatient person; always have been. As soon as you tell me I have to wait for something, it makes me want it with a ferocity that even surprises me at times. Spring is like that for me. Tell me I have to wait for the weather to warm and the tulips to bloom, and I go out of my damned mind with eagerness and anticipation. Until spring gets here, I have to be content with the plants that are flowering. Enjoy!
