Today I had my voluntary, 16 week gender scan. Originally I was only scheduled to come in at week 20 (April 20th), but after I found a place online that did earlier scans fairly cheaply, I decided that there was no reason to wait. Unfortunately, since the appointment could
only be made on a Monday, and since it was all the way in Tacoma,
neither Michael nor my Mother in Law could come with me. So, I asked my
friend Sarah if she wanted to come and she agreed. We headed out fairly
early, stocked with coke and sour gummy worms (lots of sugar to make the
baby move a lot), and only got lost twice (stupid GPS!). Eventually we
made it to the clinic.
'Clinic' is too nice a word for it. I was expecting a normal, doctor's type office. Instead we found ourselves in an old building from the 70s. We entered the suite door, and found not an office, but a hallway full of doors to individual offices. Naturally I was confused and knocked on the locked office door bearing the advertised number. A man answered the door with a thick Romanian accent and invited us in. It was a small office, holding only a desk, sofa, exam chair and ultrasound equipment, and a large screen TV. It was the most bizarre set up I've ever seen. Apparently this Romanian chap was conduction ultrasounds from the privacy of his rented office. So bizarre! Thank god Sarah was there or I would have been so much more freaked out!
A minute after he applied the ultrasound gel and wand, the baby's bum and legs came up on the screen. I saw clearly between them, a little dangling penis. We are having a BOY! There was no question as it was pretty clearly defined. Holy cow was I ever surprised!
Since day one, I have been absolutely convinced that I was having a girl. All of the silly little old-wives tales suggested a girl (not that I put TOO much stock into them lol), and even the ultrasound tech at my 10 week scan told me that the baby had implanted on the left side (which generally means girl). So I was taken completely by surprise when the tech today began the gender scan and almost immediately it was clear that this was no girl! The goods were on full display and after a few minutes of double checking, the tech told me that he felt 100% certain that we were having a boy.
Although I was certainly surprised, I was not disappointed. Ultimately I really just want a healthy child and the gender matters so little in comparison. Plus, I had two little brothers and I had a great time with them. I think I can be a good boy mom. I am just going to have to learn to deal with rambunctious wrestling and broken bones from time to time. Who knows, perhaps I will have the kind of son who prefers reading and playing with legos to rough and tumble sports.
When I try and imagine who my son will be, there are just so many possibilities. It makes my mind spin with them all. All I know is that I can't wait to meet him and learn about who he is and what he is like. I do know that no matter what, I will love him forever, like him for always, and as long as I'm living, my baby he'll be.
