Michael and I decided that it would be a good idea to take one last hurrah vacation before this kid arrives. So we rented a houseboat in Pleasant Harbor Marina, just south of Dosewallips State Park, over on the Olympic Peninsula. The day we left, there was a huge thunderstorm, complete with lightening that lasted for hours and made an encore appearance the next night as well.
The house boat itself was small, but efficiently arranged and nice enough. It had a kitchen, bathroom, tv, couch, a queen bed and best of all, a hot tub! As it turns out, Pleasant Harbor was kind of like a small town, in that it had a laundromat, general store, a restaurant and a full size heated pool and hot tub. Our first night we took alternating dips in the pool and hot tub. It was wonderful and the weather was great! The worst part of that night was the bed. it was like sleeping on a plank, it was so firm. I am not sleeping too great anyways these days and that did not help matters any!
The next morning we decided to go check out the Olympic Peninsula a bit, and headed to Sequim to see the town and pick blueberries. We drove to several farms but the blueberries weren't ripe yet. Eventually we found a strawberry farm and proceeded to pick some of the sweetest, ripest strawberries we had ever eaten. Picking for me was so hard as I couldn't bend over and squatting hurt after just a short time. So Michael picked most of the berries. After that we drove to Dungeness Spit and looked out at the Pacific Ocean for a bit before heading back to Pleasant Harbor (it was a 90 minute drive).
For dinner, we decided to get pizza at the small, on site restaurant/general store, and were pleasantly surprised to find that it was a pretty good one. You never know what you are going to get in a place like that. We spent some more time in the pool and hot tub and decided to spend the rest of the night chilling on the boat's front porch. Thats when another huge thunderstorm blew up and it started pouring rain and flashing lightning (though oddly no thunder!). It was like our very own, personal 4th of July! It was so neat to sit on that porch, the waves rocking us gently, watching the rain pour down and the sky light up. The storm lasted all throughout the night, finally abating at around 4am or so.
The next morning the sun was out, the water was as calm as glass, and it was like there had never been any storm at all. The first thing I did was to take a dip into the houseboat hot tub. Let me tell you, that is the way to wake up in the morning! Its warm, and relaxing yet stimulating. I came out refreshed, and ready to start the day. True to fashion, Michael wanted to get an early start so that we could get home early. So we ate breakfast, packed up and drove home. The weather was great at home too and it was nice to spend the remaining hours of the weekend, enjoying the sunshine and relaxing at home. I am so happy that we took that trip. I know I will have special memories of it once this little guy is born. Especially since future trips will likely be few and far between! All in all, it was a fabulous babymoon!
