Bathroom Remodel

Every year, the week of Thanksgiving, Michael takes a week off. Since the man doesn't know how to take a proper rest, he likes to spend this time working on projects around the house. You will not find me complaining about this particular trait as it has resulted in some pretty nice changes around our house.

Last year at this time he remodeled the guest bath. It turned out so well that we decided the master bath could use a similar update. The vanity and ugly tile flooring were straight out of the 1990's and not at all to our taste. The other problem we found was that the tile was a terrible choice for that bathroom. Not only was it cold on our feet most of the time (not pleasant when getting out of a nice, warm shower), but it made the room feel colder as well. It was also really hard to clean dust, hair and other debris off of it. I hated every aspect of that floor!

After removing the toilet, vanity/sink and all the molding, the first step was to somehow fill in the gaps where the grout lines were, so that the floor became perfectly level. We bought some self leveler for floors and Michael spread it on with a float, much like normal grout.

It was very rough, like sandpaper and I had my doubts that it would result in a smooth floor. Eventually though (after several applications), the floor was level, albeit with a rough texture to it. No matter though, it was level enough to install the same linoleum that we used in the hallway bathroom. I love that flooring as its both easy to clean and warm on the feet!

The next step was to paint the walls. The previous owners were pretty lazy and neglected to paint behind the vanity or toilet. It didn't matter as you couldn't see behind the vanity, but was pretty obvious behind the toilet. The other bad thing was that two paint colors ago, the room was a bright, blood red color. Whoever painted this blood red paint wasn't very careful and there were tiny, and sometimes large spots of paint all over the room. It was to the point where one of those spots would constantly catch my eye and make me wonder if I had cut myself or something. So naturally, we repainted the master bath the same color as the hall bath, and did a much better job at it that any other previous tenant.

Once the walls were painted we repainted the ceiling as well, just to brighten things up a bit. Michael then put the new flooring in. It looked a million times better! After that he reinstalled the molding and we put fresh caulk and paint on it. Finally it was time to figure out what to do with the vanity. In the hall bath, we just painted it a different color (as it was a cheaper alternative to buying a new, large vanity). With this bathroom though, since the vanity was so much smaller, we thought we could probably find a brand new vanity that was reasonably priced. We set out to Home Depot to test this theory and found exactly what we were looking for in no time flat!

Michael quickly installed the new vanity (hooked up the plumbing), reinstalled the toilet and ta daaa! The bathroom looked like a completely different room! To cap things off, he also put in a new threshold and a new door and handle. It all looks SO much nicer. I can't wait until we can replace all the doors in the house. I suppose that will be a project for another day though :)
