Product Review: Squishy Snak Pak

A while back, a friend sent me a link for these spouted pouches called Squishy Snak Paks. At the time, Will was only 2 or 3 months old, and seemed very far away from eating solids. So I looked at it, thought it was a great idea, and then left it at that. Honestly, I thought that these things would be pretty easy to find in stores.

Once we started solids, I went to Target, to buy jars and squeezable packs of baby food, and quickly realized two things: 1). many of these store bought foods had added ingredients (like preservatives, excess salt, sugar or food coloring) that I wanted to avoid, and 2). those squeezable packs are expensive! They are not so bad when baby first starts eating solids, as they don't eat very much at one sitting. But once they start eating larger amounts, they can easily go through one of these pouches per meal! I was not willing to shell out that kind of dough, when I could quite easily make my own food for a fraction of the cost.

Thats when I remembered about these pouches. Try as I might to find something similar in stores (I checked grocery stores, Target, Amazon.com and BabiesRUs), time and time again, I came up empty handed. The closest I came was to find a baby food making kit that you could buy, that included a food processor, a funnel and these special refillable pouches, that could only be used with this system and funnel. Fun fact: making your own baby food suddenly becomes a lot less affordable if you have to spend over $100 on a special kit to do it! Finally, after not being able to find cheap, easy to use and reusable pouches anywhere, I broke down and ordered these online.

I cannot believe that I didn't do it sooner! Not only were these things totally affordable ($14.98 including shipping, for a two pack), but they were super easy to use. The bottom of the pack closes with a zippered seal, like a ziplock bag, only more heavy duty. So you can make whatever pureed concoction you want, spoon it into the bag, then seal it shut. Then take it with you and feed your kid! If you want to be fancy, you can buy one of those plastic spoons that screw onto the squeeze packs, but I prefer to just squeeze it into Will's mouth like I am frosting a cake. Plus its a cleaner endeavor that way. I bring one of these bags every time I go out, since squeezing pureed squash into his pie hole with a Squishy Pak, is a hell of a lot easier than breastfeeding in public. In conclusion, I highly recommend these nifty little pouches, and can easily foresee using them for all my future and present kids, for many years to come!
