There has not been a lot going on at the new house site in the last month. Mainly its just been sitting there ever since they finished pouring the foundation at the end of December. But in the past week or so, it has begun to show some signs of life. Last week they spent a lot of time grading the lot and filling in the foundation. This is just a semi-rough grade though. They will go back over it again a couple of times, including once to dig the drainage pits and once after the house is finished.
Before they filled everything in, they also laid all of the drainage pipe through and around the foundation. In addition they also dug out the new driveway, in the spot where the final driveway will be, and they filled it with crushed gravel. The old, temporary driveway they were using was filled in again as well. It is interesting to see how the site looks with the dirt all smoothed down. We can definitely get a better sense of how everything will be placed, now that the foundation is complete. I am relieved to say that the back yard will be plenty big, but not so big that I will be overwhelmed with work keeping it pretty. The front yard will be a tad bigger than I would like, since we had to set the house a bit further back as per city rules, but I will landscape it so that it will be as low maintenance as possible!
According to our builder, from here on out things will happen at a quicker rate (I know I've heard THAT before *eyeroll*). The framers begin in earnest this week and the main frame of the house is supposed to completed by the end of February, when the roof trusses are scheduled to arrive. That is very exciting to think that in a month's time we will have a framed out structure on the premises! Its been a long time coming. I of course, will update with pictures as the building goes up, bit by bit.
The final thing that we have been doing, is preparing for the move at our end. We have started packing boxes, throwing junk away, discussing the benefits to selling versus renting our current house, donating books, clothing and other stuff to goodwill, and generally just starting the process of moving. We also have started to buy the appliances for the new house. We are going to take our old washer and dryer with us (sadly for me. I wanted to buy new ones but as Michael likes to remind me, a new washer dryer set is expensive!), so that leaves a gas range, refrigerator, dishwasher, hood fan and microwave.
As of last week, we have purchased the range and refrigerator. We were pretty pleased with our purchases. We got really great deals at Sears Outlet. We were going to get a dishwasher there as well, and went as far as to purchase one online, and then pick it up all the way in Tacoma, when we ran into trouble. When I say 'we' I mean Michael. He drove all the way down to Tacoma after work one evening to pick up this dishwasher, but when he got home and unloaded it from the truck, he noticed that the entire corner was completely crushed. It was so bad that not only was there no way it wouldn't be noticeable, but it was likely that the dishwasher wouldn't even be functional.
The worst part was that they didn't even have a second of the same model. So the next night he had to drive all the way back down there after work to return it, and we couldn't even replace it. Poor guy did not get a lot of down time in those two days. The really frustrating thing about all of this is that we have a Sears Outlet about 15 minutes down the road from us, and we had read on the Sears Outlet website that you can return an item purchased at any Sears Outlet location, at any other location. But when we tried to return the dishwasher purchased in Tacoma, at the location close to us, they said that they only accept returns from items bought in store. When we contacted the website's customer service, they simply told us that their website was wrong. They basically told us to screw off and we were pissed! So anyway, that was an unfortunate experience and we are still needing to buy a dishwasher.
Below is a panoramic image of what our new back yard will look like, sans landscaping. It is about 65 feet deep and 80 feet wide. So the kids will have plenty of room to run around and play and I will have plenty of grass to mow! ;)
