William 3.2

As of this morning, William now weighs 30.5lbs, has a head circumference of 19 3/4" and is 37.5" tall.

William is really into reading lately even more so than usual, and has memorized many of his books. So he will read them to us as though he can actually read, even though hes only memorized the words. Its really cute though and makes reading a lot less work for me when I don't have to actually say anything ;)

His speech has suddenly become just like a regular kid's speech. He now says all of the intermediary words such as: has, like, is, was, on, the, he, she, etc. Except for some trouble with pronouncing his "Ls" he can talk perfectly and is understood by most adults. Its been such a big turnaround in just the last 3 months! His new thing is to look outside and proclaim, "Oh! Its almost night time. Its brown and black outside!" He has also been singing a lot more lately. His old standby was "Twinkle Twinkle Little Star," but now he sings " Mary Had a Little Lamb," "Old McDonald," and the "ABC" song. I sure do love hearing his cute little voice singing around the house!

I suddenly realized the other day that we had finally reached a much longed for milestone with Will. He can now tell us exactly what he wants or needs, in very specific detail. And if its an object that he wants, he can tell us the exact location of said object. For instance, the other day he asked for his cup of water. I glanced around the kitchen and didn't see it, so I asked him where it was. He said, "Oh! Its in my room!" and ran off to go get it himself. I love this new phase!

He is very interested in being a helper around the house lately, which I love, because now he is old enough to actually be a help! He tells me, "I'm a big helper in this family!" (which is a line from Daniel Tiger's Neighborhood), and runs off to do whatever helpful thing he thinks of next. He helps put laundry away, sweep the floors, put toys away, put his clothes back in their drawers, put objects back into the rooms they belong in, get things out of the fridge for me when I'm making dinner, put his own shoes on and climb into his car seat himself, etc. And he just so darn excited to do all of it! Its very cute.

We finally converted his crib into a toddler bed and so far its going well. He had been climbing in and out of his crib at night (while in his sleep sack) so we felt this would be safer for him. I sure hope this doesn't interfere with his quality of sleep! I have found him reading piles of books in his bed in the morning, so I know that he does get out of bed to retrieve those books, but I am of the opinion that whatever keeps him quiet in there, I am ok with. And reading is never a bad thing!

He has been waking up 1-2 times a night, every night lately, I think due to night terrors. He always says that he "heard a noise!" I usher him back to bed and assure him that there is nothing to be afraid of, and then hope that that is the last I hear from him that night. The funniest time was when I went in there to comfort him at 3am, and he told me that he had farted so loudly that the noise scared him and he started crying. I had a REALLY hard time not laughing at that! Kids can be so funny sometimes!

In a major departure from how he has been his whole life so far, he has not been super excited about bedtime lately. As soon as we announce that its bed time, he starts crying and saying things like, "no I don't want to go to bed!" Even with promises to read stories he is not mollified. Usually we get him to go to his room without too much drama. His main request is that I either put him to bed, or sing him the Sandman Song (his favorite bedtime song) and give him bedtime kisses (one eskimo kiss, one butterfly kiss and one regular kiss). Since I always put Nora to bed (I have to nurse her), Michael always puts Will to bed unless hes out of town, and lately Will has not been thrilled with that either. The last few nights in particular have been rough and we've had to endure up to an hour of crying and pleading not to go to bed. We have been having to go back in there 5 or 6 times to usher him back into bed, and he keeps getting out of bed, opening the door and crying loudly into the hallway. Its a challenging phase and I hope its over soon!

Will is also going through a very clingy phase lately. He never wants to let me out of his sight and if I leave the room or go somewhere and leave him with Michael, Michael tells me that he asks for me repeatedly the entire time I am gone. I think Michael feels a bit like chopped liver these days. You can see him getting very anxious anytime I start going upstairs when he is downstairs, or if its bedtime and he can't stay up and be with me. Preschool drop offs have also been a bit rough and he's cried and begged to stay with me, the last three times. It breaks my heart! I wonder if part of that has to do with the move. He has also been asking to see or visit the old house a lot lately, and tells me that he misses the old house. We've told him that another family lives there now, and we did go pick up mail a couple of times from the new owners, so he got to see the outside, but I can tell that hes still processing the fact that we don't live there anymore. He probably brings it up 2-3 times a week. I don't know if that is related to his sudden clinginess towards me, but I wouldn't be surprised.

I mostly love this age so far. We have had very little challenging behavior from him and for the most part he is just becoming more advanced in his conversation and understanding of the world. He is my little buddy and while he requires a LOT of attention, he is so sweet and helpful that its hard to be too irritated by his constant need for my presence. We spend a lot of time reading and talking and being silly together, and while he has some very delicate emotions right now (he cries a lot over very easily hurt feelings), a gentle demeanor goes a long way with him. But then hes always been that way, its just a little more magnified now. Everyone keeps telling me how hard three year olds are, I am interested to see what other changes and developments this year brings!
