Eleanor at 27 Months

She has been rather difficult at times lately, when she decides that she has her own opinion about what she'd rather do. The times that we always seem to struggle the most, is brushing her teeth (she refuses and we have to pin her down, screaming), getting into the car seat (she refuses and I spend 10 minutes wrestling her into position, while she screams in protest) and putting her to bed (she doesn't want to be in our arms when we sing her nightly lullaby, and struggles mightily). I have recently resolved the bedtime struggle at least though. Now I put her straight into bed, I ask her which end of the bed she wants to sleep in, I tuck her in and THEN sing her the lullaby. If only I could find alternative strategies for the other two times. I have tried asking her to brush her own teeth, but then she does a crap job and wont give us a turn. Counting to 3 and bribing work to get her into her car seat . . . some of the time, but I hate to do that every time. *Sigh* I suppose she is usually soooo good and easy going, it would be too weird if she never had moments like this. All the same I will be glad when she grown out of it!

She is starting to develop a little bit of a persnickety side. If any doors are open, she immediately has to close them (sometimes this is annoying, like when I am trying to take stuff out of the fridge, or put away laundry). If her clothes get dirty or her hands or feet get dirty, she requires them to be washed immediately. She even points out messes on the floor or on Will for example. Her hands have to be clean, always. If she notices any dirt on herself, she will stop everything and demand I clean her. Its a new, funny little side to her!

This was Nora's first 'real' Halloween. She was legitimately excited to dress up and was actually able to walk herself to doors and get candy in her bag (unlike last year). She tried so hard to keep up with the big kids and did really fairly well through most of the night. She was dressed as a lady bug and looked just so cute! She even had fun assisting with the pumpkin carving. While Will wanted nothing to do with touching the 'guts,' Nora was right in there, pulling out handfuls of seeds and slimy gunk. She loved cleaning it out! I guess that goes back to her persnickety 'having to be clean' side ;) She gets that from me ;)

Lately her favorite thing to do is come up, grab your arm or hand rather insistently, and lead you around the house or room, to wherever she wants you to go. If she wants a snack, she'll lead you to the pantry and point. If she wants some water she will lead you to the sink and point. If she wants to dance with you she will grab both of your hands and start spinning. Its adorable. She also has started to do something a little less adorable lately as well. If she doesn't want you to sing, she will cover your mouth with her hand. The other day we were watching a music video and I was singing along with it. She instantly put her hand over my mouth to prevent my singing. I was so offended haha!

One of the new things she has started to do, is share her pacifiers with Will. So usually I get Will up first in the morning, then I got get Nora up. Once Will gets himself dressed, he will come into Nora's room, and she will give one of her two pacifiers to him. At first it started out with her just handing them to him, but over time its evolved to her throwing them to him. And boy does that girl have a good aim! She regularly impresses me with how far and how accurate her throws are. I've regularly seen her hit him in the chest, from across the room, or sometimes even the head! And these are not soft, baby throws. She packs a punch behind them!

Nora is definitely starting to get into some two year old behavior. I am taken a bit by surprise because I felt like Will did a lot of this same kind of stuff when he was 1.5-2. By the time he was Nora's age, he was mostly over this kind of behavior. I naively thought that since Nora had reached nearly 2.5 with no real behavioral issues, we had escaped it entirely. Like I said, NAIVE! ;) Don't get me wrong, she is still very good, but I did have to put her in her very first time out the other day. I have only had to threaten it one other time and she capitulated, but this time she refused. I asked her to pick up a bowl that she had violently thrown (like her brother, throwing seems to be her anger outlet of choice), and she adamantly refused. She did not like being made to stand in the corner, but after her time was up, she picked up that bowl with no resistance. Something tells me this is only the beginning of encounters like this ;)
