[For those who may have missed them: part I, part II and part III]
As we get ever closer to the equinox, the plants are responding to the longer days by growing like mad. It seems like in a matter of days, some specimens have doubled or tripled in size. The colors that are out there right now are truly magnificent. I knew when I was designing the beds this year that the colors would be great. What I didn't count on was the accident of placement leading to some great color combinations.
For example, I planted an apricot-colored heucherella in the shade garden. A the time when it was planted, everything else was dormant underground. When the bleeding hearts and hostas finally emerged from the ground, I found that I had accidentally planted this heucherella night next to a blue hosta. That color combo is divine! Of all of the 40 hostas that I have, it just happened to be that blue one. There are many examples of these happy accidents all around the yard.
This is truly the year of great foliage in my garden. Part of this is because I tend to buy plants that look good all the time and not just while they are flowering (hence nice leaves). Also, I tend to buy very drought and/or cold tolerant plants, and many of these happen to have cool leaves. Ultimately, I am trying to build a garden that is both easy to care for and beautiful. Who says a girl can't have it all?
